As Calgary grows, so do the pressures on our neighbourhoods and the volunteers who work tirelessly to keep their communities thriving. Community associations play a critical role in preserving the character and vitality of our city. They are the lifeblood of Calgary, led by passionate volunteers who dedicate their time to building community spirit through programs and services.
In 2025, I am committed to working with City Council and administration to find ways to restore funding to community associations and to explore how the City can better champion these vital organizations. From maintaining community centres and rinks to supporting after-school programs and community gardens, these organizations ensure our neighbourhoods remain places where Calgarians feel connected and supported.
In my year-end interviews with Calgary media outlets last week, I reiterated this commitment and shared my plans to meet with Community Association representatives on January 22 to discuss how we can address these issues together.
We cannot afford to lose the programming and spaces that bring our city to life. These community hubs are not just physical spaces—they’re the heartbeat of Calgary’s neighbourhoods, where people gather, connect, and create lasting bonds. Preserving the spirit of Calgary means ensuring community associations have the resources they need to succeed.
I do recognize the fear many feel that Calgary’s growth, and need for more housing options, could threaten the character of their communities. I believe growth and housing options can coexist with preserving the spirit of our neighbourhoods. By working closely with community associations, we can manage this growth thoughtfully and ensure that Calgary remains a city where people feel at home.
Calgary’s community associations are grassroots organizations that embody our city’s resilience and sense of belonging. Moving forward, I will work with all orders of government and local organizations to ensure these groups have the funding and resources they need to continue making meaningful contributions. Together, we can create a Calgary that grows while remaining true to its roots—a city that champions its communities and builds a future we can all be proud of.
