Born in the U.K., Jyoti Gondek immigrated to Canada with her family at age four, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moving throughout the province over her childhood. Growing up in the prairies, she embraced Canadian culture while preserving her Punjabi heritage. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba, Jyoti moved to Alberta with her husband in 1996. Her career spanned roles at Credit Union Central and Greyhound Canada, focusing on community engagement and leadership. Elected as Ward 3 Councillor in 2017, she became Calgary’s Mayor in 2021, championing public safety, fiscal responsibility, economic development, and diversity. Jyoti holds a Ph.D. in urban sociology and has been gifted the Blackfoot name, Nattoyipittakii, Holy Eagle Woman. She lives in North Central Calgary with her family.
