Three years ago, I set out with a vision to establish Calgary as North America’s strongest inland port, a hub of trade and economic opportunity that would create thousands of jobs and fuel our city’s long-term prosperity. Now this vision is becoming reality. Calgary City Council has officially approved Prairie Economic Gateway – a transformative project that will reshape our region’s economic future and position us as a leader in global trade.

This is more than just an infrastructure project. It’s a defining moment for Calgary.

With over 30,000 new jobs on the horizon and an expected $7 billion economic impact, the Gateway is a game changer. It ensures that our city remains competitive, innovative, and resilient in the face of economic shifts – whether that be the threat of U.S. tariffs or otherwise.

What This Means for Calgarians

At its core, Prairie Economic Gateway is about opportunity. Opportunity for workers, for businesses, and for the entire Calgary region. This project strengthens our trade connections, diversifies our economy, and lays the foundation for sustainable growth.

Jobs and Paycheques: 30,000 new jobs mean more opportunities for Calgarians to build their careers right here at home. Whether in logistics, manufacturing, or infrastructure, this project will fuel employment in industries that keep our city moving.

Stabilizing the Tax Base: By attracting major private investment and broadening Calgary’s corporate tax base, we can help stabilize and potentially lower property taxes for homeowners. When businesses thrive, residents benefit.

A Diversified Economy: The Gateway will ensure that Calgary isn’t solely dependent on traditional industries. By investing in trade, logistics, and manufacturing, we’re protecting our economy from future downturns and setting our city up for long-term success.

A Strategic Location with Global Impact

Calgary is already a major transportation hub, but this project takes us to the next level. Prairie Economic Gateway connects our region to the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade corridor and strengthens our east-west interprovincial trade networks. Situated along Canadian Pacific Kansas City’s (CPKC) main rail line, close to YYC International Airport, and at the intersection of key highways, we have all the pieces in place to be a dominant force in North American trade.

This means goods produced in Calgary can move seamlessly across the continent, making us a top destination for global investment. The more we strengthen our trade infrastructure, the more attractive our city becomes for businesses looking to expand.

A Model for Collaboration

A project of this scale doesn’t happen without strong partnerships. Prairie Economic Gateway is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the City of Calgary and Rocky View County. This partnership sets a new standard for regional cooperation, proving that when we work together, we can create opportunities that benefit everyone.

I want to extend my gratitude to our private sector partners, including Shepard Development Corporation, CPKC Rail, and Calgary Economic Development, for their vision and commitment. I also want to recognize Reeve Crystal Kissel and Rocky View County Council for their partnership, as well as our provincial government for their support. And finally, to my fellow Councillors and the City of Calgary team – thank you for believing in this vision and working tirelessly to make it a reality.

Looking Ahead

With Council’s approval, the next phase begins. Now, we focus on securing investments from the private sector and other orders of government, finalizing infrastructure plans, and setting the stage for construction.

Prairie Economic Gateway is no longer just a concept – it’s happening, and it’s happening right here in Calgary.

This project represents more than economic growth; it represents a new chapter for our city. A chapter defined by innovation, opportunity, and prosperity. We are setting the course for a future where Calgary is a global leader in trade, a hub of economic resilience, and a city where people want to live, work, and invest.

We dreamed big – and today, we are making history.
